Series History

Oklahoma leads the all-time series 2–0. These programs have met only twice, so there is very little history here — but both meetings mattered.

The first was the Orange Bowl on January 1, 1976, where No. 3 Oklahoma beat No. 5 Michigan 14–6 on touchdown runs by Billy Brooks and Steve Davis. When No. 1 Ohio State lost the Rose Bowl that same day, Oklahoma was voted national champion — Barry Switzer’s second consecutive title.

The second was the first leg of this home-and-home, September 6, 2025 in Norman, where Oklahoma won 24–13. That eleven-point margin is the largest in the series.

What Sets This Matchup Apart

Michigan enters 2026 under a new head coach. Sherrone Moore was fired for cause in December 2025, and Kyle Whittingham was hired later that month after 21 years at Utah, bringing offensive coordinator Jason Beck and defensive coordinator Jay Hill with him. Quarterback Bryce Underwood returns as a sophomore, along with running back Jordan Marshall, who ran for 932 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2025, and four offensive line starters.

Michigan finished 2025 at 9–4 and ranked 21st, losing to Texas 41–27 in the Citrus Bowl. ESPN’s preseason poll has the Wolverines 15th for 2026.

Oklahoma went 10–3 in 2025 and reached the first round of the College Football Playoff, losing to Alabama in Norman. Quarterback John Mateer returned for 2026 after thumb surgery disrupted his 2025 season. Brent Venables enters his fifth year. The SEC preseason media poll picked Oklahoma seventh; ESPN’s preseason poll has them 12th.

Michigan Stadium seats 107,601 — the largest stadium in the United States — so inventory for a non-conference game is usually deep. That tends to keep get-in prices more reasonable than the matchup’s profile would suggest, particularly in the upper rows of the end zones.

An 11 a.m. CT kickoff means noon local time, which historically softens demand slightly compared with a night game. Visiting fans are typically seated in the upper corners; if you want to sit with Oklahoma supporters, filter for sections in that range rather than buying the cheapest available seat.

Michigan Stadium is a bowl with a very shallow bank, which means the sideline seats well above row 40 give a noticeably better view of the whole field than lower rows closer to the action.

Atmosphere and Traditions

Michigan Stadium opened in 1927 and is nicknamed The Big House. It has drawn crowds over 100,000 for more than 300 consecutive games, a streak dating to November 1975. The record attendance is 115,109, set against Notre Dame in 2013.

Before kickoff the team runs onto the field and touches the M Club Supporters banner held at midfield. The Michigan Marching Band forms the Block M and plays “The Victors.” For a noon kickoff the stadium fills early — gates open two hours before and the tailgating on the golf course across Main Street starts well before that.

Final Thoughts

This is a rare matchup — only the third meeting ever between Oklahoma and Michigan, and Oklahoma’s first trip to Ann Arbor. A noon national television window in the largest stadium in the country, against a Michigan team in its first year under Kyle Whittingham, makes it one of the more interesting non-conference dates on either schedule.
