Series History
Georgia leads the all-time series 1–0. There has been exactly one meeting, and it was a memorable one.
On January 1, 2018, No. 3 Georgia beat No. 2 Oklahoma 54–48 in double overtime in the Rose Bowl, a College Football Playoff semifinal now regarded as one of the best playoff games ever played. Oklahoma led 31–14 in the second quarter behind Baker Mayfield in his Heisman season; Georgia rallied and won on a Sony Michel touchdown run in the second overtime, then advanced to the national championship game.
That is the entire history. The 2026 meeting will be the first time these teams have played a regular-season game.
What Sets This Matchup Apart
Georgia is the SEC preseason favorite. The Bulldogs went 12–2 in 2025, beat Alabama 28–7 to win the SEC Championship — a fifth straight appearance in that game, a conference record — earned a first-round playoff bye, then lost 39–34 to Ole Miss in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal. They finished sixth in the final AP poll.
The SEC preseason media poll picked Georgia to win the conference ahead of Texas. Senior quarterback Gunner Stockton returns after completing roughly 70 percent of his passes for 2,894 yards and 24 touchdowns with ten rushing scores, and six defensive starters are back. Kirby Smart enters his tenth season. ESPN’s preseason poll has Georgia fifth.
Oklahoma went 10–3 in 2025 and reached the playoff. John Mateer returns at quarterback.
Seating and Ticket Notes
Sanford Stadium holds 93,033, and Georgia home games against ranked non-divisional opponents are among the harder tickets in the SEC. A September date against a playoff team from the previous season, in a matchup that has never happened in the regular season, should price accordingly.
Visiting fans are seated in the upper corner of the east end. Sanford has a pronounced slope — the field sits well below street level — and the upper sideline rows give the best overall view.
Atmosphere and Traditions
Sanford Stadium opened in 1929 and is formally Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium. It has had a natural grass surface for its entire history.
The privet hedges that ring the field have been there since 1929 and give the stadium its “Between the Hedges” nickname. They were removed for Olympic soccer in 1996 and replanted from cuttings, and were fully replaced again in January 2024 with plants grown from cuttings of the previous hedges. Uga, the English bulldog mascot, watches from an air-conditioned doghouse at field level; former Ugas are entombed in a marble mausoleum in the stadium’s southwest corner. The Dawg Walk brings the team through the crowd before kickoff, and the Redcoat Band plays throughout.
Final Thoughts
Oklahoma’s first ever game in Athens, against the SEC’s preseason favourite, in a series whose only previous chapter was a double-overtime playoff classic. One of the more compelling road dates on the Sooners’ 2026 schedule.
